What is Manual Therapy?

Manual Therapy is a specialized, hands-on approach designed to help your body move better and feel better. Using advanced techniques to address joint restrictions, muscle tension, and areas of dysfunction, your physical therapist works directly with your body to improve mobility, decrease discomfort, and restore proper movement.

Whether you are recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic pain, or simply noticing that your body is not moving the way it used to, manual therapy can help identify and address the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms. Treatment may include joint mobilization, soft tissue techniques, IASTM, therapeutic cupping, trigger point therapy, stretching, and movement-based techniques.

At AZ Manual Physical Therapy, we believe effective treatment goes beyond simply treating symptoms. Each session combines skilled hands-on care with individualized movement strategies to help you regain strength, confidence, and the ability to do the things you enjoy.

IASTM

What is IASTM?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a hands-on treatment that uses specially designed stainless steel tools to gently glide over the skin and muscles. These tools are utilized during manual therapy by highly trained therapists to identify and address areas of tightness, scar tissue, or restricted movement that may be difficult to feel with their hands alone.

How can it help?

IASTM may help improve mobility, decrease muscle tension, reduce pain, and encourage healthy tissue healing. It is commonly used for tendon pain, muscle strains, joint stiffness, scar tissue, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and many chronic aches and pains. Mild redness after treatment is normal and typically fades quickly.

Therapeutic Cupping

What is it?

Therapeutic cupping uses medical-grade silicone or plastic cups placed on the skin to create gentle suction. Rather than pushing into the tissue like a massage, the cups gently lift the skin and underlying tissues.

How can it help?

The lifting effect may improve blood flow, reduce muscle tightness, improve tissue mobility, and decrease pain. Cupping is often used to treat neck and back pain, shoulder pain, muscle soreness, and areas of stiffness. Temporary circular marks or mild bruising can occur after treatment and usually disappear within several days.

Trigger Point Therapy

What is it?

Trigger points are small, tight, sensitive areas within a muscle that can cause pain where they are located or even in other parts of the body. Trigger Point Therapy involves applying precise pressure to these areas to help them relax and restore normal muscle function.

How can it help?

Releasing trigger points can reduce muscle tension, improve flexibility, decrease headaches and referred pain, and allow muscles to work more efficiently. Although some tenderness during treatment is common, many patients notice improved movement and reduced pain afterward.

Therapeutic Taping

What is it?

Therapeutic Taping is a flexible, lightweight therapeutic tape that is applied to the skin to provide support without limiting your normal movement. Unlike traditional athletic tape, elastic tapestretches with your body, allowing you to stay active while receiving gentle support throughout the day.

How can it help?

Therapeutic Taping may help reduce pain, improve muscle function, decrease swelling, and provide additional support to injured or irritated muscles and joints. It is commonly used for shoulder, knee, back, ankle, and neck conditions, as well as tendon injuries and muscle strains.

While the tape is not a cure on its own, it can be an effective addition to your treatment plan by helping you move more comfortably and confidently between therapy sessions. Most applications can be worn for several days, including during normal daily activities and showering.
